5 Easy Ways to Take Screenshots in Windows
Capture errors, receipts, online classes and computer work quickly using built-in Windows tools.

Method 1: Win + Shift + S (best for most work)
- Press Win + Shift + S. The screen dims and a small bar appears at the top.
- Choose a mode: Rectangle, Free-form, Window or Full screen.
- Drag over the area you need.
- The image is copied. Paste it with Ctrl + V into WhatsApp Web, Word, Gmail or Paint.
- To edit or save: click the notification that appears → draw, highlight or crop → Save (Ctrl + S).
Method 2: Win + PrtSc (save the full screen as a file)
The screen flashes briefly and a PNG file is saved at This PC → Pictures → Screenshots with names like Screenshot 2026-10-25 141530.png. Ideal when you need many screenshots for a report or a complaint.
Method 3: Alt + PrtSc (only the active window)
Click the window you want (for example an error message), then press Alt + PrtSc. Only that window is copied – your taskbar, other tabs and notifications stay private. Paste with Ctrl + V.
Method 4: PrtSc key alone
On older Windows, PrtSc copies the whole screen to the clipboard. In recent Windows 11 builds it opens the Snipping Tool instead (setting: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Use the Print screen key to open screen capture). Turn that option off if you prefer the old behaviour.
Method 5: Xbox Game Bar (Win + Alt + PrtSc)
Captures the current app or game window and saves it in Videos → Captures. Press Win + G to open the Game Bar, where you can also record the screen with audio – see screen recording on Windows and mobile.
Long web pages (scrolling screenshot)
- Microsoft Edge: press Ctrl + Shift + S → Capture full page.
- Chrome: press F12 → Ctrl + Shift + P → type full size screenshot → Enter. The PNG is downloaded.
- For receipts and forms, Print → Save as PDF is often better than a screenshot because text stays searchable.
Before you share a screenshot
- Use Snipping Tool’s highlighter or crop to hide details.
- For error reports, capture only the error window (Alt + PrtSc).
