Google Docs Voice Typing for Hindi and English Notes
Create notes, letters and homework faster by speaking instead of typing.
Start voice typing (computer)
- Open a Google Doc in Chrome (voice typing works in Chrome-based browsers).
- Tools → Voice typing or press Ctrl + Shift + S. A microphone box appears.
- Click the small language name above the mic and choose हिन्दी (भारत) or English (India).
- Click the mic (it turns red), allow microphone access, and speak clearly at normal speed.
- Click the mic again to stop.
Punctuation and commands
| Say (English mode) | Result |
|---|---|
| “period” / “full stop” | . |
| “comma” | , |
| “question mark” | ? |
| “new line” | line break |
| “new paragraph” | new paragraph |
| “select last word”, “delete”, “bold” | Editing commands (English only) |
In Hindi mode, spoken punctuation is less reliable – add पूर्ण विराम (।) and commas with the keyboard after dictating.
On a phone (any app)
Install Gboard (Android/iPhone), add Hindi in Gboard settings → Languages, then tap the mic on the keyboard in Google Docs, WhatsApp or Gmail. On Windows 11, Win + H starts voice typing in any text box (Hindi supported when the language pack is installed).
Get better accuracy
- Use earphones with a mic; sit in a quiet room; keep the mic 10–15 cm from your mouth.
- Speak in short sentences and pause briefly between them.
- Say names and technical words slowly; correct them later with Find and replace (Ctrl + H).
- Do not type with the keyboard while dictating – it stops voice typing.
Practical uses
- Teachers: dictate question papers, notices and remarks in Hindi without a Hindi keyboard.
- Students: dictate first drafts of essays and project reports, then edit.
- Office: minutes of a meeting in your own words right after the meeting.
- People who find typing difficult: write emails and letters by speaking.

Problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Voice typing missing in Tools | Use Google Chrome on a computer; it is not in the Docs mobile app (use Gboard there). |
| Mic does not turn on | Allow microphone: click the camera/mic icon in the address bar; check Windows Settings → Privacy → Microphone. |
| Stops after a few seconds | Silence or keyboard use stops it – click the mic again. |
| Wrong script (Roman instead of Devanagari) | Choose हिन्दी (भारत) in the language list. |
|---|---|
| “period” / “full stop” | . |
| “comma” | , |
| “question mark” | ? |
| “new line” | line break |
| “new paragraph” | नया paragraph |
| “select last word”, “delete”, “bold” | Editing commands (सिर्फ़ English) |
