Speed Up a Slow Computer: Practical Checklist for Windows Users
Fix common reasons behind a slow laptop or desktop without unnecessary software.
First, find out what is slow
A “slow computer” has a cause. Before deleting things at random, spend two minutes finding it. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and look at the CPU, Memory and Disk columns while the PC feels slow.
| What you see | Likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Disk at 100% for minutes | Old hard disk (HDD), Windows Update, antivirus scan | Fix 4 and Fix 6 |
| Memory above 85% | Too many apps/tabs for your RAM | Fix 2 and Fix 3 |
| CPU high with one unknown program | Heavy app or malware | Fix 5 |
| Everything fine but boot takes 3+ minutes | Too many startup apps | Fix 1 |
| C: drive almost full (red bar) | No space for updates and temp files | Fix 4 |
Read our detailed guide on Task Manager: CPU, Memory and Disk to understand these numbers.
Fix 1: Stop apps that start with Windows
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup apps (Windows 11) or Startup tab (Windows 10).
- Sort by Startup impact.
- Right-click apps you do not need immediately (game launchers, music apps, “updater” tools, unused cloud apps) → Disable.
- Keep your antivirus, touchpad/audio drivers and OneDrive/Google Drive if you use them.
- Restart and compare the boot time.
Fix 2: Tame the browser
- Each Chrome/Edge tab can use 100–500 MB of RAM. Close tabs you are not using or bookmark them.
- Turn on Memory Saver (Chrome: Settings → Performance) or Sleeping tabs (Edge: Settings → System and performance).
- Remove extensions you do not use: open
chrome://extensionsand click Remove. - Press Shift + Esc in Chrome to see which tab or extension uses the most memory.
Fix 3: Uninstall what you do not use
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Sort by Size or Install date.
- Uninstall trial software, duplicate antivirus programs, old games and “PC cleaner/booster” apps.
- Keep anything you are unsure about and search its name first.
Fix 4: Free disk space safely
Keep at least 15–20% of the C: drive free. Windows needs it for updates, the page file and temporary files.
- Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files: tick Temporary files, Delivery Optimization files and Recycle Bin (check it first) → Remove files.
- Cleanup recommendations on the same page shows large files and unused apps.
- Turn on Storage Sense so temporary files are cleared automatically.
- Move photos and videos to an external drive or cloud; empty the Downloads folder.
C:\Windows, System32 or WinSxS by hand, and avoid “registry cleaner” tools – they can break Windows and give no real speed.Fix 5: Scan for malware
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection.
- Click Scan options → Full scan (takes 30–90 minutes).
- If a problem remains, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same page – the PC restarts and scans before Windows loads.
- Uninstall unknown toolbars and browser extensions that change your search engine.
Fix 6: Updates, power mode and drivers
- Let pending Windows Update finish once – the first restart after a big update can be slow, later starts become faster.
- Plugged-in laptop? Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → Best performance.
- Update graphics and chipset drivers from your laptop maker’s support site (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus).
- Restart at least once every few days – “Shut down” with Fast Startup does not fully clear memory.
When software fixes are not enough
| Upgrade | Typical effect | Approximate cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| HDD → SSD (most important) | Boot in under 30 s instead of 2–3 min; apps open 3–5× faster | ₹2,000–4,000 for 256–512 GB SATA SSD |
| 4 GB → 8 GB RAM | Browser + Office together without freezing | ₹1,500–3,000 if a slot is free |
| Clean the fan and vents | Less heat throttling, quieter laptop | Free (or a service charge) |
Prices vary by brand and city; check that the SSD/RAM type matches your laptop model before buying. Back up your data before any hardware change – see the 3-2-1 backup rule.
10-minute checklist
- Restart the PC.
- Task Manager: note what is high (CPU / Memory / Disk).
- Disable unnecessary startup apps.
- Close extra browser tabs; remove unused extensions.
- Uninstall unused programs and extra antivirus.
- Clear temporary files; keep 15–20% of C: free.
- Run a Windows Security full scan.
- Install pending updates and restart.
- Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup apps (Windows 11) या Startup tab (Windows 10) खोलें।
Fix 2: Browser
- Memory Saver (Chrome: Settings → Performance) या Sleeping tabs (Edge: Settings → System and performance) चालू करें।
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps
- Windows Security → Virus & threat protection
Fix 6: Updates, power mode और drivers
Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → Best performance।

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my laptop slow even though it is new?
Common reasons are many startup apps from the manufacturer, Windows still installing updates in the first days, a hard disk (HDD) instead of an SSD in budget models, or only 4 GB RAM. Check Task Manager to see which one it is.
Do PC cleaner and booster apps help?
Rarely. Windows already has Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup. Many “booster” apps run in the background themselves, show ads or change settings. Uninstall them.
Will an SSD really make my old computer faster?
For most computers with a hard disk, yes – it is the single biggest improvement. Boot and app opening times usually drop dramatically. The processor and RAM still limit very heavy work like video editing.
Should I reset Windows to make it fast?
Only as a last step, after backing up your files. Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC with “Keep my files” reinstalls Windows and removes installed apps.
