How to Make a Quiz in Google Forms with Answer Key and Automatic Marks
Turn a Google Form into a self-grading quiz: enable Make this a quiz, set the answer key and points for each question, and release scores to students automatically.
What a Google Forms quiz does
It is ideal for class tests, weekly MCQ practice, homework checks and entrance screening. You need only a Google account — the form works on any phone or computer, and results land in one place.
Step 1: Create the quiz
- Go to forms.google.com and click Blank (or the "Blank quiz" template if you see it).
- Give the form a clear title, e.g. Class 10 IT — Unit 3 DBMS Test, and add instructions in the description: time allowed, marks, and whether they can use notes.
- Open the Settings tab at the top and turn on Make this a quiz.
- Go back to Questions. Add a "Name" and "Roll number" short-answer question first (make them Required) so you can identify each student.
- Add your questions. For MCQs choose Multiple choice; for "select all that apply" choose Checkboxes.
Step 2: Add the answer key and marks
- Click a question. At the bottom left, click Answer key.
- Tick the correct option (or options for checkboxes).
- At the top right of the question, enter the points, e.g. 1 or 2.
- Optional: click Add answer feedback to show a short explanation or a link to a lesson for wrong answers. This turns the test into a learning tool.
- Click Done. Repeat for every question. Name and Roll number questions should have 0 points.
Step 3: Quiz settings that matter
| Setting (Settings tab) | What to choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Release grades | Immediately after each submission — or — Later, after manual review | Use "Later" if you have short/paragraph answers to check or want to announce results together. |
| Respondents can see | Missed questions, Correct answers, Point values | Turn off "Correct answers" if other sections will take the same test later. |
| Collect email addresses | Verified | Needed for "Later" release and for sending each student their own score. |
| Limit to 1 response | On | Stops repeat submissions (students must sign in). |
| Shuffle question order (Presentation) | On for MCQ tests | Makes copying from a neighbour harder. |
Also shuffle the options inside each MCQ: in the question's three-dot menu choose Shuffle option order.
Step 5: See marks and responses
The Responses tab has three views:
- Summary — average, median and range, plus "Frequently missed questions". This tells you which topic the class did not understand.
- Question — every answer to one question, where you can grade short/paragraph answers together.
- Individual — one student's full paper, where you can add points and feedback, then Release score.
Click Link to Sheets to get all scores in a Google Sheet. From there you can sort by roll number, calculate a class average, or copy marks into your register. For cleaning up such a sheet, see marksheet data cleaning.
Which question types are graded automatically?
| Question type | Auto-graded? |
|---|---|
| Multiple choice, Dropdown | Yes |
| Checkboxes | Yes — the student must select exactly the correct set |
| Short answer | Only when the text exactly matches an answer you listed (add spelling variants) |
| Paragraph, File upload | No — grade manually |
| Multiple-choice grid / Checkbox grid | Yes, row by row |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting to set the answer key for one question — that question silently gives 0 to everyone.
- Showing correct answers immediately when another section will attempt the same quiz later.
- Not making Name/Roll number required — you get scores you cannot match to students.
- Using short-answer questions for one-word answers without listing spelling variants ("Primary key", "primary key", "PK").
- Leaving the form open after the test — late submissions keep coming in.
Google Forms quiz
Step 1: Quiz
Make this a quiz on करें।
| Setting (Settings tab) |
|---|---|---|
| Release grades | Immediately after each submission — या — Later, after manual review | Short/paragraph answers check करने हों या results एक साथ बताने हों तो "Later" चुनें। |
| Respondents can see | Missed questions, Correct answers, Point values | अगर दूसरा section बाद में यही test देगा तो "Correct answers" off रखें। |
| Limit to 1 response | On | दोबारा submit होने से रोकता है (students को sign in करना होगा)। |
| Shuffle question order (Presentation) | MCQ tests में On | पास बैठे student से copy करना मुश्किल होता है। |
- Summary — average, median, range और "Frequently missed questions"।
| Question type | Auto-grade? |
|---|---|
| Multiple choice, Dropdown |
