Create and Extract ZIP Files in Windows
Compress folders for email, website upload and backup using ZIP files.
What is a ZIP file and why use it?
A ZIP file packs many files and folders into one file, usually smaller than the originals. It is the easiest way to email a project, upload many photos to a portal that accepts one file, or send a complete website to a hosting server.

Create a ZIP in Windows 11/10
- Open File Explorer and select the files or the folder (use Ctrl + click to pick several).
- Right-click → Compress to ZIP file (Windows 11). In Windows 10: right-click → Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder.
- A new
.zipfile appears in the same place. Type a clear name and press Enter, e.g. Class10A_IT_Project_Rahul.zip.
Extract (unzip) a ZIP file
- Right-click the ZIP → Extract All…
- Choose the destination folder and keep “Show extracted files when complete” ticked → Extract.
- Work with the extracted files, not inside the ZIP – programs often cannot save files opened directly from a ZIP.
Windows 11 (2023 update and later) can also open .rar, .7z and .tar.gz files with Extract All. On older Windows use the free, open-source 7-Zip (7-zip.org).
On Android and iPhone
- Android (Files by Google): open the ZIP → Extract. To create one, select files → ⋮ menu → Compress (available in newer versions; otherwise use a trusted app such as ZArchiver).
- iPhone/iPad (Files app): tap a ZIP to extract it. To create one, select items → ⋯ → Compress.
Password-protected ZIP (for private files)
Windows’ built-in ZIP cannot add a password. Use 7-Zip: right-click → 7-Zip → Add to archive… → Archive format zip or 7z → enter a password → Encryption method AES-256 → OK.

Common errors

Windows 11/10 में ZIP बनाएँ
