Find Saved Wi-Fi Password on Your Own Windows Computer
View the password of a Wi-Fi network saved on your own device for personal recovery, not for unauthorized access.
Short answer
netsh wlan show profile name="NETWORK" key=clear – the password is on the Key Content line.Method 1: Windows 11 Settings (connected network)
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet → Wi-Fi.
- Click <your network name> properties (the network you are connected to right now).
- Find View Wi-Fi security key and click View.
- Windows shows the password in a small box. Copy it or note it down safely.
This option was added in Windows 11 updates from 2023. If you do not see it, use Method 2 or 3.
Method 2: Control Panel (Windows 10 and 11)
- Press Win + R, type
ncpa.cpland press Enter. The Network Connections window opens. - Right-click Wi-Fi → Status.
- Click Wireless Properties → open the Security tab.
- Tick Show characters. The password appears in Network security key.
Method 3: Command Prompt (any network you used before)
Windows remembers every Wi-Fi network you have joined as a profile. The netsh command can list them and show the saved key.
- Click Start, type cmd, then choose Run as administrator (needed on many PCs to see the key).
- List saved networks:
netsh wlan show profiles - Copy the exact name from the list and run:
netsh wlan show profile name="Sharma_Home_5G" key=clear - Scroll to Security settings. The password is shown next to Key Content.
Security settings
-----------------
Authentication : WPA2-Personal
Cipher : CCMP
Security key : Present
Key Content : (your password appears here)
| If you see… | Meaning / fix |
|---|---|
Profile "…" is not found | Name typed wrongly – copy it exactly, keep the quotes, spaces matter. |
| No Key Content line | Open Command Prompt as administrator and run again. |
Security key : Absent | Open network (no password) or an enterprise login (username + password, not a shared key). |
| The network is not listed | This PC never joined it, or the profile was deleted (“Forget”). |
On Android and iPhone
Android 10 and newer
- Open Settings → Network & internet (or Connections on Samsung) → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the gear/arrow next to the connected network.
- Tap Share (or QR code) and confirm with your fingerprint, face or PIN.
- A QR code appears; on most phones the password is written below it. Another phone can simply scan the QR code to join.
iPhone (iOS 16 and newer)
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the ⓘ next to the network.
- Tap Password and unlock with Face ID/Touch ID/passcode. The password is shown and can be copied.
Forgot it everywhere? Use the router
If no device remembers the password, check the sticker under your router (default network name and key) or log in to the router page (often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) with the admin password and look under Wireless/Wi-Fi Security. If the admin password was changed and is lost, a reset button sets everything back to the sticker values – you will then need to set up the internet connection again, so ask your service provider first.
Keep your Wi-Fi safe
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 security, never “Open” or old WEP.
- Use a long password (12+ characters) that is not your phone number or name.
- Change the router’s admin password from the default.
- Give guests a guest network instead of your main password.
- If someone you do not trust knew the password, change it and reconnect your devices.
netsh wlan show profile name="NETWORK" key=clear
- Win + I दबाकर Settings खोलें।
- Network & internet → Wi-Fi
- Win + R
ncpa.cplलिखकर Enter दबाएँ। Network Connections window खुलती है। - Wi-Fi पर right-click → Status।
- Wireless Properties पर click → Security tab खोलें।
- Show characters पर tick करें।
netsh wlan show profiles - List
netsh wlan show profile name="Sharma_Home_5G" key=clear - Security settings तक scroll करें।
Security settings
-----------------
Authentication : WPA2-Personal
Cipher : CCMP
Security key : Present
Key Content : (यहाँ आपका password दिखता है)
|---|---|
Profile "…" is not found | नाम ग़लत लिखा – ठीक-ठीक copy करें, quotes रखें, spaces ज़रूरी हैं। |
Android और iPhone पर
Android 10
- Settings → Wi-Fi
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I see the Wi-Fi password on Windows 11?
Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → your network properties → View Wi-Fi security key → View. For older networks use Command Prompt: netsh wlan show profile name="NAME" key=clear and read Key Content.
Why does netsh not show Key Content?
Usually because Command Prompt was not opened as administrator, the profile name was typed incorrectly, or the network uses an enterprise login without a shared key.
Can I see the password of a Wi-Fi I never connected to?
No. Windows can only show passwords of networks it has saved. Ask the owner, or use the router sticker if it is your own router.
Is it safe to share Wi-Fi by QR code?
Yes for people you trust – the QR code contains the password, so anyone who scans or photographs it can join. Use a guest network for visitors.
