Use Google Maps Offline: Download Maps Before Travel
Download map areas in advance so navigation still works in low network or no internet areas.
Why download offline maps
Mobile signal disappears on hill roads, highways between towns, inside big stations and on trains. An offline map keeps navigation, the blue location dot and saved places working without internet – and saves mobile data. GPS works without internet; only the map needs to be downloaded in advance.
Download a map (Android and iPhone)
- Connect to Wi-Fi and open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture → Offline maps.
- Tap Select your own map.
- Move and zoom the blue box to cover your route (e.g. Delhi to Rishikesh). The size needed is shown below.
- Tap Download. Rename it from the Offline maps list, e.g. “Uttarakhand trip”.

Turn on Wi-Fi only in Offline maps settings to stop updates from using mobile data.
Updates and expiry
Offline maps auto-update on Wi-Fi when “Auto-update offline maps” is on. If they are not updated for about a year they expire and stop working, so open Offline maps before every trip and tap Update if shown.
Travel checklist
- Download the route plus the destination city.
- Star the hotel, station, hospital and petrol pumps on the way.
- Carry a power bank – GPS navigation drains battery.
- Share your trip with family before leaving the network: Maps → your blue dot → Share location (needs internet at that moment).
- Note the nearest police station and emergency number 112.
Problems and fixes

Updates और expiry
“Auto-update offline maps” चालू हो तो offline maps Wi-Fi पर अपने-आप update होते हैं। लगभग एक साल update न हों तो expire होकर बंद हो जाते हैं, इसलिए हर यात्रा से पहले Offline maps खोलें और दिखे तो Update पर tap करें।
