Google Reverse Image Search: Find Image Source and Similar Photos
Find original image sources, identify objects, verify fake photos and search similar images.
What reverse image search does
Instead of typing words, you give Google a picture. It finds the same or similar images online, the pages where they appear, and information about what is in the photo. It is one of the best tools to check viral photos, fake profiles and online-shopping scams.
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| Check a viral photo | A “flood in Mumbai today” photo is actually from 2019 in another country |
| Spot a fake profile | A matrimonial or job recruiter photo is a stock model photo |
| Verify a product seller | The “original” product photo is copied from the brand’s website |
| Find the source to give credit | Who first published an infographic |
| Identify things | A plant, a monument, a bird |
On a computer
- Open images.google.com and click the camera icon (Search by image).
- Drag the image into the box, upload a file, or paste the image link.
- Google Lens results open. Click Find image source (or the Exact matches tab) to see pages using the same picture.
- In Chrome you can also right-click any image → Search with Google Lens.
On a phone
- Android/iPhone (Google app): tap the Lens icon in the search bar → choose a photo from the gallery.
- Google Photos: open a photo → Lens button.
- Chrome: long-press an image → Search image with Google.
- For a screenshot from WhatsApp, crop it first so only the photo is searched (not the chat text).
Fact-check a viral photo in 4 steps
- Reverse-search the photo and open the oldest results (look at dates on news sites).
- Compare the caption you received with the original caption and place.
- Search the claim with words + “fact check” and see Indian fact-checkers such as PIB Fact Check, Alt News, BOOM or Factly.
- If it is false, reply politely with the source link and do not forward it.
Other tools to try
Bing Visual Search and TinEye (tineye.com) sometimes find older copies that Google misses. TinEye can sort results by “Oldest”, which is helpful for finding where a picture first appeared.
Limits and privacy
- No results does not prove a photo is genuine – it may be new or edited.
- Edited or AI-generated images may match poorly; look for odd hands, text and lighting.
- Do not reverse-search private photos of other people to find their identity or address. Google also limits face search of private individuals.
- Images you upload are processed by Google; avoid uploading confidential documents.
Reverse image search
Computer पर
- images.google.com खोलकर camera icon (Search by image) पर click करें।
Phone पर
- Android/iPhone (Google app): search bar में Lens icon पर tap → gallery से photo चुनें।
- Google Photos: photo खोलें → Lens button।
- Chrome: image को देर तक दबाएँ → Search image with Google।
