Free Up Google Photos Storage Without Losing Important Memories
Manage full Google storage by deleting unwanted media, compressing photos and downloading backups safely.
How Google storage works
A free Google account has 15 GB shared by Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. When it is full, new photos stop backing up and you may not receive emails. Check the split at one.google.com/storage (or Photos → your profile picture → Account storage).
Step 1: Use “Review and delete”
- Open Google Photos → profile picture → Photos settings → Backup → Manage storage (or one.google.com → Storage → Free up account storage).
- Open the suggested groups: Large photos and videos, Blurry photos, Screenshots, Other apps’ photos (WhatsApp forwards).
- Select what you do not need → Move to bin.
- Open Bin → Empty bin. Space is freed only after this (items otherwise stay 60 days).
Free phone space without losing photos
If your phone is full (not Google storage): Photos → profile picture → Free up space. It removes phone copies of photos that are already safely backed up. They remain in Google Photos.
Step 2: Choose “Storage saver” for new backups
Photos settings → Backup → Backup quality → Storage saver. Photos are saved at slightly reduced quality (up to 16 MP; videos at 1080p) and take much less space – fine for viewing and normal prints.
Already have “Original quality” backups? In Manage storage → Recover storage (if shown), Google can convert existing items to Storage saver. This cannot be undone, so download important originals first.
Step 3: Stop WhatsApp clutter
- Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders → turn off WhatsApp Images/Video if you do not need forwards backed up.
- In WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Media visibility off, and Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download → choose Wi-Fi only or No media.
- WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage → delete large forwarded files.
Step 4: Don’t forget Gmail and Drive
- Gmail search box:

category:promotions older_than:1y→ select all → delete. - Drive: drive.google.com/drive/quota lists files by size; delete or move large videos and old backups.
Keep a copy before deleting memories
- Use takeout.google.com → select Google Photos → choose albums or years → export as .zip.
- Copy the export to an external hard disk or pen drive.
- Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule for family photos.
If you still need more space, Google One plans start from 100 GB; compare the monthly cost with an external disk.

Will Free up space delete my photos from Google Photos?
No. It deletes only the phone copies of photos that are already backed up. They remain in Google Photos online.
