PowerPoint Presentation Tips for Students and Teachers

Create clear, readable and professional presentations for class and meetings.

Plan before you open PowerPoint

  1. Write the one sentence your audience should remember.
  2. List 3–5 main points; each becomes a section.
  3. Rough slide count: about one slide per minute of talking.
  4. Then open PowerPoint, Google Slides or Canva.

Slide design rules

RuleWhy
One idea per slideThe audience reads one thing while listening
Max ~6 lines, short phrasesPeople read faster than you speak; long text makes them stop listening
Text size 24 pt+ (titles 36 pt+)Readable from the back of a classroom
High contrast: dark text on light or light on darkProjectors wash out light colours
2 fonts, 2–3 colours; use a theme (Design tab)Looks consistent
Charts instead of number tablesPatterns are visible at a glance
Same position for titles on every slideEyes know where to look

Useful PowerPoint features

  • Slide Master (View → Slide Master): change the logo/footer once for all slides.
  • Designer / Design Ideas (Microsoft 365): automatic layouts for a picture + text.
  • Align & Distribute (Shape Format → Align): neat spacing.
  • Morph transition: smooth movement between two similar slides – better than many animations.
  • Speaker notes + Presenter View (Alt+F5): you see notes and the next slide, the audience sees only the slide.
  • Hindi text: use Mangal, Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Devanagari.

Shortcuts while presenting

KeyAction
F5 / Shift+F5Start from beginning / current slide
B or WBlack or white screen (pause to talk)
Number + EnterJump to that slide
Ctrl+PPen to draw on the slide
EscEnd show

Before and during the presentation

  • Practise aloud twice with a timer.
  • Save as .pptx and PDF on a pen drive and in Google Drive; embed fonts (File → Options → Save → Embed fonts).
  • Test on the classroom projector – check videos and sound.
  • Look at the audience, not the screen; do not read slides word by word.
  • End with a summary slide and “Questions?”

Slide design

Text size 24 pt+ (titles 36 pt+)Classroom

PowerPoint features
