Self-Management Skills-II

Part A – Employability Skills, Unit 2. Self-management means controlling your own thoughts, feelings and actions to reach your goals. This unit covers stress management, self-awareness, self-motivation, goal setting and time management.

Stress and stress management

Stress is the body’s and mind’s reaction to a demand or pressure, such as exams, deadlines or conflicts. A little stress can motivate us; too much stress harms health and performance.
TechniqueHow it helps
Time managementPlanning work avoids last-minute pressure
Physical exercise and yogaReleases tension and improves mood
Healthy diet and enough sleepGives energy and focus
Positive thinkingChanges how we see problems
Hobbies, nature walks, breaksRelax the mind
Talking to family, friends, teachersSharing reduces worry and brings solutions
ABC of stress management: Adversity (the stressful event), Belief (how we think about it), Consequence (how we feel and act). Changing the belief changes the consequence. Example: low marks in a unit test (A) → “I can improve with a plan” (B) → you prepare better instead of panicking (C).

Self-awareness: strengths and weaknesses

Self-awareness is knowing your own feelings, interests, strengths and weaknesses. Strengths are things you do well (e.g. drawing, explaining, typing fast); weaknesses are areas to improve (e.g. stage fear, poor handwriting).

  • Make a list of what you enjoy and what others praise you for – these hint at strengths.
  • Note tasks you avoid or find hard – these may be weaknesses.
  • Ask teachers and friends for honest feedback.
  • Turn weaknesses into goals: “speak in class once a week” for stage fear.

Self-motivation

Self-motivation is the inner force that pushes you to do something without being told. Internal motivation comes from within (interest, satisfaction of learning); external motivation comes from outside (marks, prizes, praise, salary).

Self-motivated people set goals, stay focused, do not give up after failure, and take responsibility for their work.

Goal setting – SMART goals

LetterMeaningExample
S – SpecificClear and exact“Improve my IT marks” → “Score 45/50 in IT theory”
M – MeasurableProgress can be measuredMarks in each practice test
A – AchievablePossible with effortBased on present marks and time available
R – Realistic / RelevantFits your situation and bigger aimHelps for the board exam
T – Time-boundHas a deadlineBy the pre-board exam in January

Time management

  1. Organise – list all tasks (homework, revision, project, chores).
  2. Prioritise – mark tasks as urgent/important and do the important ones first.
  3. Control – avoid distractions such as phone notifications; set study blocks.
  4. Track – check at the end of the day what was done and adjust the plan.

Tools that help: a timetable, a to-do list, a calendar with reminders (see Google Calendar reminders).

Quick revision

  • Stress = reaction to pressure; manage it with planning, exercise, sleep, positive thinking and talking.
  • ABC = Adversity, Belief, Consequence.
  • Self-awareness = knowing strengths and weaknesses.
  • Motivation can be internal or external.
  • SMART = Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound.
  • Time management: organise, prioritise, control, track.

Practice MCQs (tap an option)

Q1. In the ABC of stress management, “B” stands for:

Q2. Working hard to win a prize is an example of:

Q3. Which goal is SMART?

Q4. “T” in SMART goals means:

Q5. Which is NOT a healthy way to manage stress?

Short answer questions (2 marks)

Q1. What is stress? Write two ways to manage it.

Stress is the reaction of body and mind to pressure. Ways: make a timetable to manage time; do exercise or yoga and get enough sleep.

Q2. Differentiate between internal and external motivation.

Internal motivation comes from within, like interest in a subject. External motivation comes from outside, like marks, prizes or praise.

Q3. Why is self-awareness important?

It helps us use our strengths, work on weaknesses, choose the right career and set realistic goals.

Q4. List the four steps of time management.

Organise tasks, prioritise them, control distractions, and track progress.

Long answer questions (4 marks)

Q1. Explain SMART goals with an example.

A SMART goal is Specific (clear), Measurable (progress can be checked), Achievable (possible), Realistic/Relevant (fits the situation) and Time-bound (has a deadline). Example: “I will score at least 45 out of 50 in IT theory by solving one chapter’s questions every day until the pre-board exam on 15 January.”

Q2. What is the ABC of stress management? Explain with an example.

ABC stands for Adversity (the difficult event), Belief (our thoughts about it) and Consequence (our feelings and actions). Example: a friend does not reply to messages (A). If you believe “she is angry with me” (B), you feel hurt and upset (C). If you believe “she may be busy with exams” (B), you stay calm and talk later (C). Changing the belief changes the result.

Part A – Employability Skills, Unit 2. इस unit में stress management, self-awareness, self-motivation, goal setting और time management हैं।

Time management

Self-motivation

Goal setting – SMART goals

S – Specificसाफ़ और सटीक“IT में अंक सुधारूँगा” → “IT theory में 45/50 लाऊँगा”

Time management

मदद करने वाले tools: timetable, to-do list, reminders वाला calendar (Google Calendar reminders देखें)।

  • ABC = Adversity, Belief, Consequence।
  • Self-awareness = strengths और weaknesses जानना।
  • SMART = Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound।
  • Time management: organise, prioritise, control, track।

Q4. Time management

Q1. SMART goals
