Green Skills-II

Part A – Employability Skills, Unit 5. Green Skills-II is about sustainable development, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), problems that block sustainable development, and what each of us can do.

What is sustainable development?

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland Commission, 1987).

It balances three areas: economic (jobs and income), social (health, education, equality) and environmental (clean air, water, forests, climate).

Importance of sustainable development

  • Saves natural resources (water, fossil fuels, minerals) for the future.
  • Reduces pollution and protects health.
  • Slows climate change and protects biodiversity.
  • Creates green jobs – solar installation, recycling, organic farming, electric vehicles.
  • Reduces poverty and inequality.

Problems related to sustainable development

ProblemExample
Food securityCrop loss due to floods/drought; food waste
Degradation of soilOveruse of chemical fertilisers and pesticides
Shortage of fresh waterFalling groundwater levels, polluted rivers
Air and water pollutionVehicle smoke, stubble burning, industrial waste
Climate changeRising temperatures, heatwaves, melting glaciers
Loss of forests and biodiversityCutting trees for land, extinction of species
Rapid population growthMore demand for land, water and energy

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

In 2015 the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030. India is one of the countries working towards them.

No.Goal
1No poverty
2Zero hunger
3Good health and well-being
4Quality education
5Gender equality
6Clean water and sanitation
7Affordable and clean energy
8Decent work and economic growth

10Reduced inequalities
11Sustainable cities and communities
12Responsible consumption and production
13Climate action
14Life below water
15Life on land
16Peace, justice and strong institutions
17Partnerships for the goals

Our role in sustainable development

  • Save water: close taps, fix leaks, reuse RO waste water for cleaning.
  • Save electricity: switch off lights and fans, use LED bulbs and star-rated appliances.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: carry a cloth bag, avoid single-use plastic, separate wet and dry waste.
  • Use public transport, cycle or walk for short distances.
  • Plant and care for trees; do not burn waste.
  • Repair and reuse electronics; give e-waste to authorised collectors.

Quick revision

  • Sustainable development = meeting present needs without harming future generations’ needs.
  • Balance of economy, society and environment.
  • Problems: food security, soil degradation, water shortage, pollution, climate change, deforestation, population growth.
  • 17 SDGs adopted by the UN in 2015, target year 2030.
  • Our role: save water and energy, 3Rs, public transport, plant trees.

  • Food security – floods, droughts and food waste threaten enough food for all.
  • Soil degradation – overuse of chemicals and erosion reduce soil fertility.
  • Fresh water shortage – over-pumping of groundwater and polluted rivers.
  • Climate change – greenhouse gases cause heatwaves, floods and melting glaciers.

  • Save water and electricity at home and school.
  • Follow Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; avoid single-use plastic and separate waste.
  • Walk, cycle or use public transport.

Part A – Employability Skills, Unit 5.

Sustainable development

Sustainable development

Sustainable development

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • Public transport, cycle

  • Sustainable development =
