ICT Skills-II

Part A – Employability Skills, Unit 3. ICT Skills-II covers the operating system, basic file operations, care and maintenance of computers, and computer security and privacy.

Operating system (OS)

An operating system is system software that manages the computer’s hardware and software and lets the user interact with the computer. Examples: Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), macOS, Android, iOS.
  • Manages memory, processor time and devices (keyboard, printer, storage).
  • Manages files and folders.
  • Provides a user interface and runs applications.
  • Controls security through user accounts and passwords.

ExampleMS-DOS, Linux terminalWindows, macOS, Android

Basic computer operations and files

  • Starting: press the power button; the computer boots and shows the login screen.
  • Logging in: select your user account and enter the password.
  • Shutting down: Start → Power → Shut down. Never switch off the main supply directly – data can be lost.
  • File: a collection of related information stored with a name and extension (report.docx, marks.ods, photo.jpg).
  • Folder (directory): a container that holds files and other folders.
  • Common file operations: create, open, save, rename (F2), copy (Ctrl+C), cut/move (Ctrl+X), paste (Ctrl+V), delete (goes to Recycle Bin).

More on file types: what a file extension is and a simple file-naming system.

Care and maintenance of computers

PartCare
KeyboardTurn off and clean with a soft brush or blower; do not eat over it
ScreenWipe gently with a dry microfibre cloth; no water sprays directly
Laptop batteryAvoid overheating; do not keep it at 100% charge on the charger all the time
Whole systemKeep away from dust, water, heat and magnets; use a stabiliser/UPS
StorageDelete temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, uninstall unused apps
Make a maintenance schedule – e.g. daily: shut down properly; weekly: clean keyboard and screen, run a virus scan; monthly: back up data and delete temporary files; whenever available: install OS and software updates.

A backup is an extra copy of important data on another device or cloud, so it can be recovered if the computer fails. See the 3-2-1 backup rule.

Computer security and privacy

ThreatWhat it does
VirusAttaches to files and spreads when they are opened; damages data
WormSpreads by itself over networks and slows them down
Trojan horseLooks like useful software but harms the system or opens a back door
SpywareSecretly collects your information (passwords, browsing)
AdwareShows unwanted advertisements
RansomwareLocks your files and demands money
PhishingFake messages/sites trick you into giving passwords or OTPs
  • Install antivirus software and keep it updated.
  • Keep the operating system and browser updated.
  • Use strong, different passwords and never share them.
  • Download software only from official sources; do not open unknown attachments.
  • Use a firewall; check for https:// and the correct website address before entering details.
  • Clear cookies on shared computers and always log out.

A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser to remember you (login, cart, preferences). Cookies are useful but can be used to track you.

Quick revision

  • OS manages hardware, software, files and users; CLI = typed commands, GUI = icons and windows.
  • Shut down properly; files have names and extensions; folders organise files.
  • Clean, protect from dust/heat/water, delete temporary files, back up regularly.
  • Threats: virus, worm, trojan, spyware, adware, ransomware, phishing.
  • Protection: antivirus, updates, strong passwords, official downloads, firewall.

Part A – Employability Skills, Unit 3.

Operating system (OS)

उदाहरण: Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), macOS, Android, iOS।

  • बंद करना: Start → Power → Shut down।

Computer
