⏱ 60 min📶 Beginner🎯 100% self-study
Day 1 / 10

✅ Today you will learn

  • What SEO means and why it matters
  • How search works: crawling, indexing, ranking
  • Parts of a search results page (SERP)
  • Four types of SEO: on-page, off-page, technical, local
  • White-hat vs black-hat SEO

🏢 In the real world

Sharma Computer Institute in Aligarh has a beautiful website, but when students search “computer course in Aligarh”, the institute does not appear on the first page. Over the next 10 days you will fix that step by step – the same way a professional SEO executive would.

What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the work of making a website easy for search engines to find, understand and trust, so that it appears for the searches its audience makes – without paying for ads. Traffic from these unpaid results is called organic traffic.

SEO (organic)

  • Free clicks
  • Takes weeks to months
  • Keeps working after the effort
  • Builds long-term trust

Paid ads (SEM/PPC)

  • Pay for every click
  • Results from day one
  • Stops when the budget stops
  • Marked as “Sponsored”
Most businesses use both – SEO for the long run, ads for quick reach

How Google Search works

CrawlGooglebot finds pages through links and sitemapsIndexGoogle reads and stores the pageRankBest pages are ordered for each searchServeResults shown on the SERP
Three stages: a page that is not crawled or indexed can never rank
StageWhat happensWhat can block it
CrawlingGooglebot downloads pages it discovers from links, sitemaps and earlier visitsrobots.txt blocking, broken links, server errors, pages with no links pointing to them
IndexingGoogle renders the page, understands text, images and structure, and stores itnoindex tag, duplicate content, very thin or low-quality pages
RankingFor each query Google orders indexed pages by relevance, quality, usability and context (location, language, device)Content that does not match intent, poor experience, low trust
💡 Check if a page is indexed

Four types of SEO

TypeCoversDay
On-page SEOKeywords, title, headings, content, images, internal links2, 3, 4
Technical SEOCrawling, indexing, sitemap, robots.txt, speed, mobile, HTTPS, structured data5, 6
Off-page SEOBacklinks, mentions, reputation8
Local SEOGoogle Business Profile, reviews, local citations9

White-hat SEO

  • Helpful content written for people
  • Honest titles and descriptions
  • Earned links and real reviews
  • Follows Google’s spam policies

Black-hat SEO

  • Keyword stuffing and hidden text
  • Buying links, link schemes
  • Fake reviews, cloaking
  • Mass-produced pages with no value
Black-hat can bring a manual action or loss of rankings
💼 Office practice – professional tipPromise clients effort and good practice, never a “guaranteed #1 rank”. No one controls Google’s ranking; anyone who guarantees it is either lying or using tricks that can get the site penalised.

A simple SEO plan

  1. 1Understand the audience and what they search (Day 2).
  2. 2Create one strong page for each search intent (Days 3–4).
  3. 3Make sure Google can crawl, index and load the site fast (Days 5–6).
  4. 4Measure in Search Console and improve (Day 7).
  5. 5Build reputation – links and local presence (Days 8–9).
  6. 6Audit and repeat every month (Day 10).

Task 2: Mark each as white-hat or black-hat: (a) writing a detailed fee and syllabus page (b) repeating “computer course Aligarh” 40 times in white text (c) asking happy students for honest Google reviews (d) paying ₹2,000 for 500 backlinks.

💼 Interview Corner

Explain how Google Search works in one minute.

Googlebot crawls pages by following links and sitemaps, Google renders and indexes the content, and for each query its ranking systems order indexed pages by relevance, quality, usability and context. Only crawled and indexed pages can rank.

Can you guarantee a #1 ranking?

No. I can follow best practices, improve content, technical health and reputation, and report progress; ranking decisions are Google’s.

Summary

  • SEO helps a site appear in unpaid search results.
  • Crawl → index → rank → serve.
  • Four types: on-page, technical, off-page, local.
  • Use white-hat methods; nobody can guarantee #1.
