Day 3: On-Page SEO – Title, Meta, Headings, Links
✅ Today you will learn
- Write title tags that rank and get clicks
- Write meta descriptions that sell the click
- Use one H1 and a logical heading outline
- Create short, readable URLs
- Optimise images and internal links
🏢 In the real world
The Tally course page of Sharma Computer Institute has the title “Home” and a vague description. Google shows it as a weak result and nobody clicks. In this lesson you rebuild the page’s on-page signals so both Google and students instantly understand it.
Title tag
- Usually shown as the blue headline in results – the most important on-page element.
- Put the main keyword near the start; add a benefit and the brand at the end.
- Aim for about 50–60 characters so it is not cut off (Google actually measures pixel width).
- Every page needs a unique title. Google may rewrite titles that are vague or stuffed with keywords.
Meta description
The meta description is not a direct ranking factor, but it often becomes the snippet under your title – a good one raises the click-through rate (CTR). Keep it around 140–155 characters, summarise the page, include the keyword naturally and end with a reason to click.
<head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> <title>Tally Prime Course in Aligarh with GST | Sharma Computer</title> <meta name="description" content="Learn TallyPrime with GST, inventory and payroll in Aligarh. Small batches, practical training and certificate. Book a free demo class today."> <link rel="canonical" href="https://sharmacomputers.example/courses/tally/"> </head>
Google ignores the <meta name="keywords"> tag. You do not need it.
Headings and page outline
Use one H1 that states the topic, then H2s for main sections and H3s inside them – like a table of contents. Headings help readers scan and help Google understand the structure. Never pick a heading level just for its font size; use CSS for styling.

| Element | Good | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| URL | /courses/tally/ | /page.php?id=37&cat=2, /Tally_Course_FINAL_new/ |

On-page checklist
- 1Unique title, main keyword near the start, about 50–60 characters.
- 2Meta description about 140–155 characters with a reason to click.
- 3One H1; H2/H3 in a logical order.
- 4Short, lowercase, hyphenated URL.
- 5Images compressed, descriptive file names and alt text.
- 62–3 internal links in and out with descriptive anchor text.
- 7Main keyword in the first paragraph – naturally, no stuffing.
Solved examples
Example 1: Fix the title length
| Version | Title | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| Before | Home | 4 |
| Draft | Tally Prime Course in Aligarh – 3 Months with GST | Sharma Computer | 67 |
| Final | Tally Prime Course in Aligarh with GST | Sharma Computer | 56 |
The draft (67 characters) risks being cut, so “– 3 Months” moved into the description, giving a final title of 56 characters with keyword first and brand last.

What makes a good title tag?
Unique, accurately describes the page, main keyword near the start, a benefit, brand at the end, and short enough (about 50–60 characters) not to be truncated.
Why are internal links important?
They help Google discover and understand pages, pass importance between pages, and guide users to related content; orphan pages struggle to rank.

- Meta description: ~140–155 characters, drives clicks.
