Day 9: Local SEO & Google Business Profile
✅ Today you will learn
- How Google ranks local results: relevance, distance, prominence
- Create and verify a Google Business Profile
- Fill the profile completely and keep it active
- Keep NAP (name, address, phone) consistent
- Earn and respond to reviews the right way
🏢 In the real world
Students searching “computer institute near me” see a map with three institutes. Sharma Computer Institute is not among them, even though it is closer than two of them. Its Google Business Profile was never claimed and its phone number differs across the internet.
How local ranking works
Never use a fake address or virtual office to appear in another area – it breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Improve relevance and prominence instead.
Set up Google Business Profile
- 1Search the business name on Google Maps; if a profile exists, claim it, otherwise create one at business.google.com.
- 2Enter the exact real-world business name – no extra keywords (“Sharma Computer Institute”, not “Sharma Computer Institute Best Tally Python Course Aligarh”).
- 3Choose the most specific primary category (e.g. “Computer training school”) and a few relevant secondary ones.
- 4Add address and service area, phone, website, opening hours (including holidays).
- 5Complete verification (Google may ask for a video, phone/SMS, email or postcard).
- 6Add services/courses, a clear description, real photos of the lab, classroom and building, and the logo.
NAP consistency
NAP = Name, Address, Phone. It should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Mismatches confuse both customers and Google.
| Listing | Name | Address | Phone | Check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Website footer | Sharma Computer Institute | Shop 4, Example Market, Railway Road, Aligarh 202001 | +91 90000 00000 | ✅ OK |
| Google Business Profile | Sharma Computer Institute | Shop 4, Example Market, Railway Road, Aligarh 202001 | +91 90000 00000 | ✅ OK |
| Facebook page | Sharma Computers | Railway Road, Aligarh | +91 90000 00000 | ❌ Name, Address |
| Local directory | Sharma Computer Institute | Shop 4, Example Market, Railway Road, Aligarh 202001 | +91 98888 88888 | ❌ Phone |
Fix the Facebook page name and address, and correct the old phone number in the directory listing.
Reviews
Do
- Ask every satisfied student, e.g. on the last day of the course
- Share the direct review link or QR code
- Reply to every review – thank, and address problems politely
- Use feedback to improve
Don’t
- Pay or give discounts for reviews
- Write fake reviews or ask staff/family to post
- Ask only happy students (“review gating”)
- Argue publicly with unhappy reviewers
Example: the profile has 4.2★ from 35 reviews. If 15 new students leave reviews averaging 4.8★, the new average is (4.2 × 35 + 4.8 × 15) ÷ 50 = 4.38★.
Solved examples
Example 1: Reply to a negative review
Review (2★): “Batch started 10 days late and nobody informed us.”
Reply: “Thank you for telling us, and we are sorry. The October batch was delayed because our lab upgrade took longer than planned, and we should have messaged every student. We have added the 10 days at the end of your course at no cost, and we now send batch updates on WhatsApp. Please call us on +91 90000 00000 if anything else needs fixing. – Rakesh Sharma, Director”
- Thanks and apologises without excuses.
- Explains briefly and states the fix.
- Moves the conversation offline with a contact.
- Future readers see a responsible business.
Practice exercises (unsolved – answer hidden)
Try each exercise yourself first – on paper, in a text editor or on your own site – then open the answer to check.
🏋️ Practice – do it yourself
Show solution
With 10 reviews the new ones would need to average 5.1★ – impossible (maximum 5). With 5★ reviews it needs 12: (3.9 × 20 + 5 × 12) ÷ 32 = 4.31★.Show solution
Keyword stuffing in the name (use the real name only); category too broad (choose “Computer training school”); use real photos of the institute; add opening and holiday hours.Show solution
Should include: what you teach (main courses), who it is for, what makes you different (lab, small batches, trainer experience), location landmarks and timings – written naturally, with no phone numbers, links or offers, which the description field does not allow.🏅 Job skills unlocked today
