MySQL + SQL · Lesson 8
Advantages and Limitations of DBMS
Advantages of DBMS
| Advantage | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Reduced redundancy | Data stored once, linked by keys |
| Consistency | One update reflects everywhere |
| Data sharing | Many users at once |
| Security | User-level permissions |
| Integrity | Constraints keep data valid |
| Backup & recovery | Automatic protection |
Limitations of DBMS
- Cost: Software, hardware and trained staff are expensive.
- Complexity: Designing and managing needs skill.
- Size: DBMS software itself takes large memory/disk.
- Risk: If the central database fails, everything stops (single point).
Summary
- Advantages: less redundancy, consistency, sharing, security, integrity, recovery.
- Limitations: cost, complexity, size and central failure risk.
