Child Online Safety: Simple Rules for Parents and Teachers

Practical, non-technical rules to keep children safe online at home and school.

Start with conversation, not just controls

Filters help, but the strongest protection is a child who knows they can tell a parent or teacher about anything strange online without being punished or losing the phone. Children often hide problems because they fear the device will be taken away.

  • Agree simple family rules: where devices are used (common room), screen-free times (meals, after bedtime), and which apps are allowed.
  • Teach: never share home address, school name, phone number, location or photos in uniform with strangers.
  • Teach: “If anyone asks you to keep a secret from your parents, that is a warning sign – tell us.”
  • Explore apps and games together before saying yes.

Parental controls to switch on

WhereWhat to set
Android: Google Family LinkApprove app downloads, daily screen-time limits, bedtime, location
iPhone/iPad: Screen TimeContent & Privacy Restrictions, Ask to Buy, Downtime
YouTubeYouTube Kids for young children; supervised account for preteens
Google SearchSafeSearch “Filter” (locked by Family Link for supervised accounts)
Play StoreContent ratings by age; require approval for purchases
Wi-Fi routerFamily-safe DNS filter or schedules, if your router supports it
Most social media apps (Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, WhatsApp in India) require users to be at least 13, and India’s data-protection rules require verifiable parental consent for children’s data. Review privacy settings together: private account, comments and messages from friends only.

Risks to explain at the right age

  • Online grooming: an adult pretending to be a friend, giving gifts or game credits, and asking for secrecy or photos.
  • Cyberbullying: mean messages, exclusion from groups, fake profiles – save screenshots, block, report, tell an adult.
  • Gaming scams: “free diamonds/skins” links that steal accounts or parents’ payment details.
  • Sextortion and morphed photos: never pay or comply – tell a trusted adult and report immediately.
  • Oversharing: location tags, school uniform photos, daily routine stories.

Where to get help

  1. Stay calm and thank the child for telling you.
  2. Save evidence (screenshots, usernames, links) – do not forward abusive images.
  3. Block and report the account on the platform.
  4. Report on cybercrime.gov.in (it has a dedicated section for crimes against children and women) or call 1930.
  5. Childline 1098 offers 24×7 help for children; 112 for emergencies.
  6. Inform the school if classmates are involved.
