Ch 3: Advanced Features of Writer

Table of Contents (ToC)

ToC: an automated, hyperlinked list of topics and sub-topics with page numbers, taken automatically from the heading styles.
Golden rule: A correct ToC is generated only if proper heading styles (Heading 1, 2, 3...) are applied first. Writer supports 10 heading levels (H1–H10).

Insert: Insert > Table of Contents and Index > Table of Contents, Index or Bibliography. The dialog has 5 tabs: Type, Entries, Styles, Columns, Background.

Writer does not update the ToC automatically — right-click > Update Index to refresh, or Delete Index to remove.

Templates

Template: a preset layout to create professional documents easily. It stores text, graphics, styles, page numbers, headers and footers. Saved with the extension .ott.
TaskPath
Create from templateFile > New > Templates
Save own templateFile > Templates > Save (.ott)
Import / ExportTemplates dialog > Import / Export
Set defaultRight-click template > Set as Default
Import vs Export: Import = bring a template INTO the list. Export = save a template OUT to share.

Track Changes

Track Changes: records every edit made by different users so the author can Accept or Reject each change, and reviewers can add Comments.

Enable: Edit > Track Changes > Record (shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C). Added text shows in colour; deleted text in strike-through. Compare Documents: Edit > Track Changes > Compare Document.

Table of Contents (ToC)

Insert: Insert > Table of Contents and Index > Table of Contents, Index or Bibliography। Dialog में 5 tabs: Type, Entries, Styles, Columns, Background।

Writer ToC को अपने आप update नहीं करता — right-click > Update Index, या Delete Index
